You just need to be clear about what you want to do with your computer, and what programs you like to use.
Anything that you do through a web browser - such as email, office work, web searches, video calls, entertainment, online banking, etc - Linux does perfectly.
If you need specific programs for specific tasks - like graphic art, fim editing, taxes, autocad, music mixing, gaming, etc - you need to make sure that either there is a Linux version of that program available, or else an open source clone that does what you need it to do.
To figure this out you can do an AI or web search, or go to AlternativeTo.net. On this site you can search a program name, and it gives a list of other programs that do roughly the same thing. For every program it summarizes what it does, gives reviews, and lists the operating systems that it runs on.
The Vancouver Linux Users Group (VanLUG) hosts free support sessions where volunteers help newcomers install Linux, troubleshoot problems, and learn new skills.
